Our Ancestors' Story [Generation 6]

Jesse Jackson was born October 16, 1786 in Surrey County, NC., the sixth child of Jacob and Ann (Beals) Jackson. When Jesse was about 10 years old, his parents and most of his siblings became part of the massive Quaker migration from North Carolina due to their opposition to the explosive growth of slavery there. First, the family made the arduous move over the Blue Ridge Mountains to Greene County, TN. in 1797. Then, in 1804, they made another hazardous move northward through the Kentucky wilderness to Ohio, settling in Clinton County. Initially, they were members of the Miami, OH Quaker Meeting located at Waynesville in Warren County. A few years later they helped establish a new Quaker Meeting and meeting house in Clinton County, which became known as the Clear Creek Meeting where their memberships were transferred in 1812. It was here that Jesse Jackson married Anne Hockett/Hoggatt.

Anne Hockett's Parents were Joseph and Ann (Thornburgh) Hockett, members of the New Garden Friends Meeting in Guildford County, NC., where Anne (Hockett) Jackson was born on March 28, 1797. She had 5 sisters and 2 brothers. Anne was 14 years old in 1811 when the Joseph Hockett family moved to Clinton County, Ohio, joining the Quaker migration from North Carolina. Jesse Jackson and Anne Hockett/Hoggatt were married on April 6, 1814 at the East Fork Monthly Meeting in Clinton County, OH.

In the early 1830s, Jesse and Anne (Hockett) Jackson left the Orthodox Quaker Meetings to join a new Quaker sect, the Hicksites. As a result, Jacob was disfellowshipped by the Orthodox Quakers in 1833; Anne was disowned for the same reason. This ended the documentation of "our branch" of the Jackson family in Orthodox Quaker records.

All of Jesse and Anne's ten children were born in Clinton County, Ohio: Malinda, Nathan, Rachel, Joseph, Elizabeth, Jacob, Asenath, Lydia, Thomas, and Jesse, Jr. When Jesse Jackson, Sr. died in 1844 at age 57, his two youngest sons, Thomas and Jesse, Jr., were 7 and 13 years old respectively, so their older brother, Joseph, was appointed as their guardian and administrator. Their mother, Anne, continued to live in Clinton County, Ohio until her death in 1873. Both Jesse and Anne Jackson were buried in the Martinsville Friends Cemetery, where Jesse's father and mother, Jacob and Ann (Beals) Jackson, were also buried.

Four of the ten children of Jesse and Anne (Hockett) Jackson continued to live in Ohio their entire lives: Nathan, Joseph, Elizabeth, and Lydia (Jackson) Morris. Five of the other siblings all moved to southern Illinois: Malinda and Jesse, Jr. to Crawford County, IL; Jacob and Asenath (Jackson) Stokes to Richland County, IL; and Thomas Jackson to Jasper County, IL.

Thomas Jackson, the next-to-youngest child in the family, moved with several other Jackson family members to Illinois; he became the father of Jury Jackson continuing our Family Tree.
